Volunteer
Spruce Carpets Ltd relied on volunteers to pilot the
idea and help set the company up. We are very aware
of how generous volunteers are with their time and how
important they are to our organisation. Our Volunteer
Co-ordinator is Tracy Taggart.

Staff and Volunteers Nov '07
We are always looking for more volunteers. Whatever
your skills or interests are, we’re sure that we can
find something to suit you. There is no typical activity
with us because it depends on what you’d like to do to help.
Here are some of the things you can do:
- Carpet cleaning
- Measuring, cutting and describing
- Making leaflets
- Designing displays
- Admin, stock control and sales
- Teaching local people about us
- Helping with presentations
- Assisting customers
We have a Volunteer Policy which outlines some of the
rules we work by. If you’d like a copy of
our volunteer policy or need more information, please
contact Tracy: tracy@sprucecarpets.org.uk or
call 0141 425 1555.
We ask all volunteers to commit to coming in on the
same day each week. We pay for volunteers travel
and contribute to lunch expenses.
Why Volunteer?
Volunteering with us is good for lots of reasons:
We don’t discriminate against people, so if you
have a criminal record, or have had drug or alcohol problems
in the past, our volunteering opportunities might help
you get back into working life.
We provide you with lots of training and learning opportunities,
including:
CPR, Manual Handling, Health & Safety, computer training,
drugs/mental health awareness, assistance with writing
English and presentation skills.
If there’s anything else that’s relevant
that you really want to do, we’ll try to help out.
We have a friendly, hardworking team and by joining
us you can make a big difference to a lot of people who
need your help.
Who we accept
Our volunteer programme is specifically aimed at people
who might have problems accessing other volunteering
opportunities because of their background – particularly
people with experience of homelessness or drug/alcohol
problems.
People with an interest in recycling, social enterprise,
carpet fitting and/or social issues are more than welcome
to get in touch and will be considered on their own merits.
Unfortunately, because of our policy of not Disclosure
Checking our volunteers, we can’t accept volunteers
we can’t accept volunteers who have a physical
or learning disabilities, or anyone under16 years of
age.
We do have a de-selection procedure which outlines behaviour
we will not tolerate from volunteers. For more
information on this contact Tracy our Volunteer Co-ordinator:
tracy@sprucecarpets.org.uk or
call 0141 425 1555
What to expect
When you phone or are referred, Tracy will invite you
in for a chat about the volunteering and what it is you’d
like to do. We will need your contact details and
at least one reference from a professional person that
knows you well. This is because we don’t
carry out Disclosure Checks on our volunteers. We
need references to make sure no volunteer is likely to
cause harm to anyone else here.
You will then be invited for a ‘Taster Day’ – a
Taster Day allows you to decide if you like it here and
lets us see if you are going to fit in. On the
Taster Day you will be given a folder with all of our
Policies and Procedures and a Training Record. The
training record lets us know what training you want to
do while you’re here. If the Taster Day goes
well, we will arrange a timetable for you, which we expect
you to stick to. You must inform us at least one
day in advance if you cannot make your timetabled day.
Other than that, how you get on here is up to you. You
can expect all the support you need and regular meetings
with Tracy to make sure everything is going okay.
We have a variety of people here and they each enjoy
their volunteering in different ways.
